Los Angeles Home Design: Embracing the Sun

Los Angeles is vibrant and diverse. Between palm trees and historic neighborhoods, the city’s homes are known for their distinct charm. At bspk design, we founded our practice in L.A. to create custom residential designs tailored to our clients. Our architecture, landscapes and interiors build off the city’s ideal climate. We believe in taking advantage of indoor-outdoor living in Los Angeles home design. This all starts with the city’s remarkable sunlight.

What makes L.A. Sunlight special?

While Los Angeles is renowned for its light, there are specific traits that set it apart. Feeling the warmth on your skin, it invites you outside. Part of its allure is its clarity. The city's proximity to the Pacific Ocean combines with its geographic location and climate. The result is that magic light quality you feel throughout the year. This clarity not only enhances how we see buildings, but designers also experiment with light and shadow to make a space feel like home.

Living in Los Angeles, you quickly realize what it's like when the streets seem to hum with a hazy, golden glow near sunset. Daylight is soft and diffused, particularly during the early morning and late afternoon. The sunlight has enhanced luminosity with clear skies, resulting in vibrant and saturated colors. This creates an array of eye-catching homes, especially alongside the diverse landscapes and architectural styles found in the city.

Home Design, Then & Now

With over 280 days of sunshine a year, you can rely on it in your own Los Angeles home design. The predictability allows for precise solar orientation. The right placement of windows, skylights, and shading devices optimizes natural light and minimizes energy use. A perfect example is the mid century modern Stahl House in the Hollywood Hills. Architect Pierre Koenig embraced abundant sunlight throughout the design. It features large floor-to-ceiling windows offering unobstructed views of the surrounding city, and is oriented for maximum sun exposure. As a result, natural light floods the interior. The open floor plan, minimalist design, and expansive windows makes it feel airy and welcoming as a home to relax and unwind.

A Light Touch in the Panorama House

At bspk, we also design to make the most of sunlight. For the Panorama House, living spaces spill onto a pool and yard through floor-to-ceiling glass sliders. You can easily open spaces to each other, whether lounging outside or to feel the sunlight warm the interior. Upstairs, the bedrooms capture breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and let in a cool breeze. There are continuous balconies that provide space to rest outside and read a book, or lay out in the sun. For all our projects, we bring a deep understanding of modern residential design to embrace light and local climates, making a house feel like home.

Sam Kraus

My name is Sam Kraus and I’m a graphic, product, and website designer from the San Francisco, Bay Area. In the past decade, I’ve launched two apparel businesses, designed absurdly soft clothing for an iconic California lifestyle brand, and created eye-catching packaging for an award-winning consumer electronics company. Today, I create brand identities and websites for individuals and small businesses seeking to stand out in their industry. I approach each project with curiosity and patience. My goal is not only to realize the client’s needs but to consider the user’s experience functionally, emotionally, and aesthetically.

I am currently pursuing my interests in architecture, sustainability, and the connection between people and place.
