A departure from our typical flat-roofed designs, this midcentury renovation in Santa Monica for a young family of three was an exercise in channeling their vision of a modern farmhouse in reference to the expansive, soaring estates found in California’s Wine Country: Think gabled standing seam metal roofs, limestone floors, olive trees, and a gravel yard. Our goal was to simultaneously create the ultimate indoor/outdoor experience. To address the existing home’s compartmentalized interiors, which had little connection to the land, we opened the floor plan, created vaulted ceilings, and added generous floor-to-ceiling glass sliders and windows at the front and rear. Gable roofs and wood cladding express a rustic warmth while clean lines throughout feel modern and minimalist.

I have known Roman Reiterer of bspk design inc. both personally and professionally for over 10 years. I have worked with him on multiple projects including most recently my personal home. He and Chris Faulhammer were instrumental in the architectural design and planning of our new home. They were easy to work with, listened to our wants and needs, and helped us execute in the best manner. I highly recommend bspk design inc.

The plan for the farmhouse-inspired home forms a “T” shape that includes a garage topped with an ADU.

Exterior wood cladding, large windows, and gable standing-seam metal roofs reference homes found in California Wine Country.

The open-plan living spaces arranged in the larger volume spill onto a backyard patio with a pool. The private areas are organized to the rear, and the primary bed is tucked at the far corner with its own outdoor access.
