Designed for a family of three in the midcentury enclave of Crestwood Hills in Los Angeles, Post & Beam Home pays homage to the historic Quincy Jones–designed residences that surround it. Because our clients also adored the nostalgic feel of farmhouses, we blended local influence with touches of country, which are expressed in elements like cedar siding and a standing seam metal roof. Being able to bring family together comfortably for meals and major milestones alike was hugely important, so we emphasized an indoor/outdoor space around the kitchen and provided direct access to a generous backyard. The lot’s shape and grade initially posed a limitation as it required us to position the home against the cul-de-sac. But this ultimately allowed us to imagine a sequence of outdoor zones that coalesce as a serene, secluded sanctuary for the family to host gatherings.

A patio flanking the entrance is easily accessible from the foyer and living area, creating an indoor/outdoor arrangement that facilitates hosting and entertaining.

Because the lot slopes to the back, the home is positioned closer to the cul-de-sac with an angled floor plan that follows its contour.

Large-format pavers create a pathway that leads from one end of the house to the outdoor patio adjacent to the entrance.

The home’s open-plan public areas are organized in a row, with the living and dining spaces and the kitchen leading to a private patio with terraced gardens at the rear.

The lot’s slope provided an opportunity to create backyard access from the basement level.
